Message from IB JAPAN CEO

IB JAPAN CEO Naruki Saito
IB JAPAN CEONaruki Saito

Hello Interested Teachers,
Allow me to introduce myself, I am CEO of IB Japan. Since my father is the founder of the company that runs this English school, I had opportunities to interact with foreign teachers from a young age, which gave me a strong interest in going abroad. Throughout my student years and into my 20s, I traveled extensively and studied abroad in Canada, experiencing both the challenges and joys of growing in unfamiliar environments. Stepping out of Japan and encountering various cultures and surroundings was a wonderful experience that, in turn, allowed me to rediscover the unique beauty of Japan.

I wanted to provide this same opportunity to young-minded Japanese and to English speaking foreigners seeking to teach English in Japan. The company brand IB stands for an "International Bridge" to achieve this dual vision. I invite you to consider this offer and to help inspire young and old Japanese students to visit and potentially live abroad. It is an opportunity one will never forget. To truly be international we need to experience life internationally. Let IB Japan be that opportunity for you.

Warm Regards,Mr. Saito

What Makes Us Different

We care about our teachers.

We’re not too big, so we know everyone. There is always someone available to provide support in English (apartment set-up, questions about documents, problems with the trains – anything!).

No surprises.

We take a more straightforward approach to placement and discuss it with you before you arrive (you don't find out just before signing a contract).

No gimmicks.

Your contract is clear and you always get your stated salary on time. We don’t use overly-complicated incentive plans to determine your base salary.

Continuous training.

We provide on-going support to help you continue to grow as a teacher.

Upward mobility.

We have opportunities for promotion and advancement for interested teachers. These include possible positions in recruiting, as block managers and head teachers.

Social events.

We are always planning events to give our teachers a chance to hang out with each other and relax outside of work.

Contracts and Benefits

  • ・First contracts are for 18 months, which provides more stability and time to adjust to Japan.
  • ・Contract renewals are for 12 months and come with permanent salary increases.
  • ・Your 'Specialist in Humanities' Visa is sponsored by us and we do most of the paperwork. These Visas are renewable.
  • ・All teachers begin at 250,000 yen per month. It is possible to earn up to 265,000 yen per month by renewing your contract.
  • ・We always pay salaries on time, every month on the 20th.
  • ・Rent, income tax, and residence tax are deducted directly from the salary. (We'll even help with your tax filing at the end of the year.)
  • ・Commutes to schools are under an hour and work-related transportation fees are fully reimbursed each month.
  • ・Total of 5 weeks of paid vacation every year (2 weeks in summer, 2 weeks in winter, 1 week in spring). We also offer 5 additional Contingency days (personal days) on top of that.
  • ・A company-sponsored, single-occupancy apartment is provided as part of your contract. To help you get started, it’s semi-furnished with all the basics (washer, refrigerator, kitchenware), a new futon, and has Internet access.
  • ・The rent is a maximum of 55,000 yen per month. In addition, there is a 2000 yen deduction for furniture maintenance in case anything needs to be replaced. Not to worry, you don't have to deal with repairs yourself; our Block Managers are always ready to help you with your living needs.

Support

The IB English Head Office offers ongoing support to teachers both in and out of the classroom. There are two main points of contact for our teachers: Head Teachers and Block Managers.

Support

Head Teachers

Each teacher is assigned a Head Teacher and joins a group of other teachers in their area. Head Teachers assist with any challenges teachers face at their schools or in their classrooms. With years of teaching experience, they provide valuable guidance to help ensure teachers’ success. Additionally, Head Teachers lead regular meetings to keep teachers informed about the curriculum and upcoming events at their schools.

Block Managers

Block Managers support teachers in their daily lives outside the classroom. They help teachers adjust to life in Japan by explaining practical matters, such as how to sort and dispose of garbage, the best grocery stores to visit, and finding local services like dentists. They also handle any issues related to apartment repairs.

Work-Life Expectations

Students

In a typical daily schedule, a teacher will see 35% of classes with children under 6 years old, 50% Elementary age and Jr. High age, and 15% adult or other. We like teaching kids!

Schedule
  • ・Japan is a very affordable place to live. Rent, groceries, and healthcare are cheaper in Japan than in many other countries.
  • ・The work schedule is a full-time, 5-day, 40-hour work week. Only about 27 of those are teaching hours.
Lessons
  • ・All lessons are under an hour (50 minutes is the maximum for 3 or more students)
  • ・Class size is limited to 8 students, which allows us to give each student the right amount of time and more individual attention.
  • ・Our teachers have regular teaching locations and see the same students every week. There are no sudden changes to teaching locations.
Locations
  • ・Branch and Franchise Schools Class size is limited to 8 students, which allows us to give each student the right amount of time and more individual attention.
  • ・Dispatch Locations Some teachers work off-site in kindergartens, daycares, and special needs centers. These lessons are typically in the mornings, with teachers going to their main school afterwards to finish their day.
  • ・Head Office Our native English-speaking staff is dedicated to supporting teachers in a variety of ways. We develop lesson plans, provide teaching resources, arrange substitutes, and provide guidance on classroom challenges. The Head Office also provides support outside of the classroom with advice on living in Japan.
The Head Office also organizes special events for continued professional development, observes lessons to provide feedback, and conducts team-teaching with teachers that need extra support in the classroom.
To maintain communication, we hold regular meetings for updates on company news and strategies, and we organize social events for teachers to connect in a relaxed setting.

IB English Methodology

IB English Methodology

At IB English, we embrace a student-centered approach to language learning through immersive English experiences. Our lessons are conducted entirely in English, encouraging students to engage with the language beyond the textbook. Through interactive games and activities, students acquire English naturally, leading to enhanced retention and understanding.
We believe that learning is most effective when it’s enjoyable. Our classrooms offer a welcoming and positive environment, empowering students to communicate confidently and connect with others through English.

Training

Training

As a teacher with IB English, we'll provide you with a thorough training experience when you start. Whether you are new to teaching as a career, or already have experience, our training will help you reach the next level. You'll continue to receive additional training and feedback about your performance during your time as a teacher with us. We believe in supporting our teachers, so that they can reach their full potential. This is an example outline of the modules you'll complete during your first week here at IB English.

Day 1 Orientation Company Policy
Day 2 Survival Training Teaching Young Learners
Day 3 Teaching Elementary Activities for Let's Go
Day 4 Teaching Adults Level Assessments
Day 5 Teaching Jr. High Final Processing

In addition to the full week of training, you'll also have the benefit of observing teachers applying our pedagogy in a real classroom environment. We don't believe in throwing a teacher directly in the classroom without any preparation, so this is done before you begin teaching on your own. This transition period provides the best chance of success for everyone. We're with you every step of the way.

Workshops

Workshops

Annual Workshops are conducted as a sixth day of training. Once our new teachers have become acquainted with their students and classes, they are brought together to participate in specialized sessions focused on advanced instructional techniques relating to each of our core textbooks.

Seminars

Seminars

The yearly Seminar brings together almost the entirety of our teaching staff. The event features presentations on innovative approaches to utilizing our textbooks, introductions to curriculum updates, and opportunities to receive instruction from publishers to gain deeper insights into their resources.

SPA Days

SPA Days

Special Projects & Activities Days provide valuable opportunities for teachers to receive in-depth demonstrations of classroom approaches, collaborate on resource creation, or even receive support from the Head Office for tasks such as tax preparation. These sessions may also involve planning for upcoming holiday events within our schools. Teachers also have the chance to connect and engage with one another. The scope of this event varies, providing flexibility in the topics and activities covered.

Teachers Meetings

Teachers Meetings

These meetings are held regularly to facilitate direct communication between the Head Office and teachers regarding classroom activities and life in Japan. Teachers may receive new instructional resources, seasonal or cultural information to enhance classroom discussions, or policy updates. With a focus on small group settings, these sessions also provide teachers with the opportunity to share feedback, raise concerns, and receive support from the Head Office, ensuring they feel heard and supported in their roles.

Teacher Testimonials

“My favorite part about teaching in Japan is how much it challenges my creativity. With young learners especially, it's important to keep the lessons fresh and that is a fun challenge! Finding a community was my first priority when I moved here. Making sure to constantly learn more about Japan has been immensely helpful in adapting. IB English provided me with accommodation (that I didn't have to look for), assistance for both teaching and settling into life in Chiba, and the company constantly assured me that they are available should I need anything. All of that was very comforting for a newbie to the job.”

“I like the experience of teaching students of all levels while also immersing myself in a culture that is so different from my own. I also like to feel like I am making a difference in their lives and helping them to get interested in English. My job with IB English was my first ever job teaching English so at first I was nervous. But immediately, after my first in person interview I felt more relaxed and sure that I would feel welcome here. IB English helped me by training and teaching me the material that I would be using. IB English also helped me with daily living such as health insurance and registering with my city hall.”
